A tuba trio from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee, Tuba a Tre, has been named as finalists in the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the largest chamber music competition in the US and the world. From an average of 125 entries representing 22 nationalities only 12 chamber ensembles in the wind instrument division are selected to participate in the final competition at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The Fischoff Competition attracts the world’s finest young chamber musicians, challenging them to pursue perfection with brilliant performances. The Tuba a Tre from Tennessee Tech is the first tuba trio to ever be selected to participate in the Fischoff competitions since the first competition in 1973. The 2011 Fischoff Competition is scheduled for May 13 – 15.

The Tuba a Tre has been a continuing ensemble comprised of select tuba performers from the tuba/euphonium studio at Tennessee Tech. Under the direction of R.Winston Morris, Professor of Music, the concept of the group goes back over forty years with personnel changing each year as different students qualify to participate. Most recently the Tuba a Tre was selected as featured performers for the Southeast Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conferenceheld at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.

For the academic year 2010/2011, the ensemble members are Kenji Kabe from Tokyo, Japan, Kyle Newland, from Columbia, Tennessee, and Preston Light from Kingsport, Tennessee. Mr. Kabe and Mr. Newland are both senior level tuba performance students and Mr. Light is a talented freshmen student. The group has historically and traditionally performed on campus several times a year andover the years has presented concerts and recitals individually, collectively and as members of the larger internationally recognized Tennessee Tech TubaEnsemble. The Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble (TTTE) is universally recognized as the premiere ensemble of its’ kind in the world. The TTTE is responsible for over 25 recording projects, seven Carnegie Hall appearances, two World’s Fairs appearances and numerous national and international workshops and conferences performances.

Tuba a Tre is one of a number of component ensembles from the TTTE and usually represents the leading performers from the tuba section. Repertoire consists of arrangements and transcriptions from all historical periods of music as well as original music initially composed beginning in the second half of the Twentieth Century. The current instrumentation is two F tubas and one CC tuba. The F tuba is slightly smaller and appropriate for the higher parts while the larger CC tuba, which is the standard orchestral tuba, is most appropriate for the lower part. Audiences have been amazed at the agility and responsiveness of these large instruments. Tuba a Tre performs programmatic material at a technical level rarely observed from the traditional tuba studio.
