CD review by Kelly Diamond, U.S. Navy Band, Washington, DC for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association Journal

For The Kings of Brass is the 11th recording from the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. This CD featuring the Tech ensemble and alumni ensemble was released in celebration of the group¹s 35 years of making music. The 11 selections on the disc are from the more than 200 compositions commissioned by, composed for, or dedicated to the ensemble.

Space is limited and I can not discuss each work but have chosen a few movements and works that should set the standard for ensemble composition and performance.

The Jared Spears - Divertimento for Tuba Ensemble is scored for 4 Euphoniums and 4 Tubas. The ensemble does a good job bringing the music to life. The composition follows traditional forms over it¹s five movements with each featuring different scoring and timbral ideas and motion. It is an excellent performance of a excellent work.

The Bernhard Krol - Feiertagsmusik (Festive Music) is a tribute to Anton Bruckner. Written as an extended chorale fantasy, it represents mastery of scoring for an ensemble and displays the wonderful depth and the dark tonal colors a tuba ensemble can produce.

The William R. Brusick - For the Kings of Brass, was a delight to hear. It is a three movement work with A Stately Fanfare, A Romantic Aria, and An Excellent Rondo. My favorite was the second movement. It features a passionate solo euphonium over a muted and distant ensemble. The Rondo features everyone, with tuba pedal tones, blazing fingers, and a light jazzy rondo theme that returns each time with a brighter tempo.

Also included on this disc: F.L. Clinard - Diversion for Seven Bass Clef Instruments; D. Boone - Three Moods;; J. Cantor - Siamang Suite; P. Holmes - Quartet for Tubas, M. Camphouse - Ceremonial Sketch; Kenyon Wilson - Dance No. 1; T. Rodgers - Air for Tuba Ensemble; J. Canter - Appalachian Carol.

This recording displays fine solo performances combined with excellent dynamic, stylistic, and shifts in timbre from the ensemble. This recording has a ³live² sound because it was recorded in a hall and not in a studio. Yes, it has a note or two they would rather have back, and a chord or two that wobbles. Does any of that matter to me? NO! It is a well produced recording drawing excitement and emotion out of a group of dedicated and hard working musicians. I applaud Winston and the Tech Ensemble for their 35 years of dedication and music and another in a long line of successful recordings.
