Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How is a Service Sorority different than other sororities?
A: A Service Sorority is an organization whose members are dedicated to doing community service. The other sororities at TTU are social sororities, making OPA the only service sorority at TTU. Of course, service is not all that OPA is about; it's also about making new friends, learning leadership skills and forming sisterhood bonds. You can find out more about OPA by clicking here.

Q: What are the benefits of joining OPA?
A: OPA helps young women build leadership skills, learn time management skills, meet new people, build self-confidence, serve the community and university, and have lots of fun! Epsilon chapter has a close-knit sisterhood, so you'll always have someone there for you!

Q: Why is Omega Phi Alpha not considered "Greek"?
A: Greek organizations are members of the Pan-Hellenic Council at TTU, and since OPA is not a member, we are not technically Greek. OPA does many of the same activities as Greek organizations. But not being a member of the Pan-Hellenic council gives OPA the chance to offer different opportunities to its members, such as holding our own Rush week and offering much lower dues.

Q: Do I need to go through Pan Hellenic Rush to join OPA?
A: If you are wanting to join OPA, you do not need to go through Pan Hellenic Rush. Since Omega Phi Alpha is not a Greek organization, OPA members will not be at Pan Hellenic Rush. We have our own Rush week, usually held after Pan Hellenic Rush week. OPA Rush is FREE and lots of fun! It's a really casual atmosphere where you can just be yourself and not worry about being "picked".

Q: How much does it cost to be a member of OPA?
A: Dues for active members are $100/semester and for pledges it is $125 for the pledge semester. But don't let the cost keep you from joining! We can work with you and your budget, allowing you to make payments over time. There are also optional costs throughout the year, such as t-shirts and our spring formal. Dues cover the service projects, some sisterhood activities, Rush, and Homecoming activities.

Q: Does OPA haze its pledges?
A: OPA has a very strict policy against hazing. We strive to make our pledges feel comfortable and feel like sisters, so we would never do anything that would make them uncomfortable or embarrass them. Alcohol and drugs of any sort are also not allowed at any functions. We want our sisters to have a good time just being themselves!

Q: Do I have to come to Rush every night?
A: You are not required to attend Rush every night, but you are encouraged. It's a great time to get to know the sisters and to ask questions and find out more about OPA. Since different activities are planned for each night, you're bound to find out something new. Plus, it's free and there will be refreshments so there's no reason to be shy! If you have class or work and are not able to be at Rush every night, let a sister know.

Q: What should I wear to OPA Rush?
A: You can wear whatever you'd like! OPA members don't judge people on what they wear. We want you to be comfortable being yourself, so you can wear pajamas if you'd like! On the last night of Rush, we do ask the Rushees to dress up, but if you aren't able, that's alright.

Q: Can I be in other organizations and still be in OPA?
A: Yes! Many of our members are involved in other campus activities, such as the Yearbook staff, Cross Country and more. Being involved in campus activities is a lesson in time-management, so there may conflicts from time to time, but knowing your priorities will help you through these conflicts. There are certain events and activities that OPA members are required to attend (such as Rush week, certain pledge activities, weekly meetings, etc), but not all events are mandatory.
Members of social sororities are welcome to join OPA, but the conflicts will be numerous, since we do many of the same things as social sororities, but also a lot of different activities (such as service projects).
