History of RUSH
The term "RUSH" is derived from the 1800's when most fraternities were founded. Freshman would come to campus and meet fraternity men there. Since most colleges were located in small towns, fraternity men would "RUSH" to the train station to try and meet the freshman arriving for their first semester in college. This is very similar to Dorm Move-In here at TTU.
What does RUSH mean?
'"Rush" refers to the procedure in which fraternities recruit new members. Rush provides potential members opportunities to come out to the house and get to know the brothers who make up the chapter.
Informal rush occurs year round by means of everyday contact with potential members. Kappa Sigma also holds many pre-rush events held by most fraternities on campus. These include cookouts, volleyball, bands, and mixers with sororities. Tennessee Tech, as like most colleges, devotes a specific week to formal rush- also known as Rush Week. Formal Rush or Rush Week refers to the week when the different fraternities around campus hold enticing events for the brothers to get to know the potential new members. This usually occurs during the 3rd week of the semester. Also, Pre-Rush and Rush are dry. This means that alcohol is not allowed at the house during these times.
Does RUSHING mean I have to join?
Absolutely not. Rush is just an opportunity for other students to get a glimpse into the life of a fraternity and decide if they want to join or not. We strongly recommend that all students come out to a pre-rush or formal rush event. It will give you a chance to meet the brothers who comprise the chapter and determine whether or not Kappa Sigma is a good fit for you.
What is a Bid?
A bid is given by the chapter as an invitation to join. Bids are usually given out on the last night of formal rush. Should you receive a bid, you will be given a deadline as to when your bid must be turned it.
What is Pledging?
After you accept your bid, you will then become a pledge. Kappa Sigma's pledge education process involves introducing the new member with the knowledge needed to understand the fraternity's history and founding. It also provides the brothers with the opportunity to make sure that you are ready to become a brother and to see how you can benefit the chapter. You will be supplied with the Bononia Docet for your reference to the history of the fraternity. The pledge period lasts only 60 days.
What is Hazing?
Hazing refers to the harassment, abuse or humiliation of those who are trying to join a group. Kappa Sigma has a zero tolerance policy on hazing. Please see kappasigma.org or our Hazing Policy by following the highlighted link.
What are the benefits in joining a fraternity?
Apart from the life long friends you will meet in joining a fraternity, there are also many advantages. There are many academic advantages in joining a fraternity. Kappa Sigma encourages all its members to exceed in their studies. The minimum GPA requirement for the Kappa Mu chapter is a 2.3. Being in a fraternity sharpens ones people skills and leadership abilities. It also provides great opportunities through career networking.
