About AFS

The American Foundry Society was founded in 1896 and has grown to an international organization of approximately 10,000 members in 47 countries. Fifty-two local chapters and 33 student chapters in the United States, Canada and Mexico are affiliated with AFS.

AFS assists member companies and individuals to effectively and efficiently manage all production operations, to profitably market their products and services, and to equitably manage their employees. AFS also promotes the interests of the foundry industry before the legislative and executive branches of  the federal government. With the direction of its volunteer committee structure, the professional staff of AFS provides support in the areas of technology, management and education to further activities that will enhance the economic progress of the metal casting industry.

The mission of the American Foundry Society today is "to provide and promote knowledge and services that strengthen the metal casting industry for the ultimate benefit of its customers and society."

The TTU Chapter

TTU is one of the few schools in the nation that is equipped with it's own dedicated casting facility. This has given our students many opportunities that are not possible at other colleges and universities. Students cast plaques for the Senior Chapter in Chattanooga that are presented to meeting speakers and also cast the prestigious TTU Distinguished Alumni, Outstanding Young Alumnus, and Outstanding Service awards. This experience is invaluable in understanding classroom concepts.
Our chapter tours local foundries in both the fall and the spring semesters. This affords the members a more intimate understanding of the different casting technologies. This exposure sparks interest in co-ops and internships.

We have sponsored several golf outings in the past few years. These fulfill several purposes. The Senior Chapter is able to enjoy a golf tournament with industry peers. The student chapter hosts the event, which serves as a fundraiser. The students also network with the Senior Chapter members, which benefits all in attendance.

Our chapter has also been the recipient of many research grants. These grants have allowed us to delve further into the intricacies of the casting process and benefit a major industry.
